How to Enter Competitions
We have been asked by many of our overseas skiers to explain how they can enter a tournament here in Florida while training here. It is quite straightforward.
The most popular tournaments are class F, which are fun tournaments. The rules are a little bit more relaxed to enable the more inexperienced and first time competitors to become involved. The entry fees are usually approximately $40.00
The class C tournaments, which are held regularly throughout the State from March to October, are the most popular with our students. They can be slalom, trick and jump or 2or 3 round slalom. These competitions are normally held over 2 days, but occasionally they are a 1day event. The cost is usually between $40.00 - $75.00 for the 2 or 3 rounds.
The class R or REL competitions are also held regularly throughout the State of Florida. They are record capability tournaments that are run on the strictest of guidelines because of the fact that if records are broken at these competitions, they can be ratified as new records. There are more judges at these competitions and video is used extensively to record the skiing action. The cost of entering these tournaments is $100.00 to $200.00 again for 2 or 3 rounds.
If you wish to enter a tournament while you are in Florida, contact us by e-mail, telephone or fax. Or alternatively, contact the AWSA to find out what competitions are being held at the time you are here. You will need an official entry form. Either Lake Hamilton Waterski School or the AWSA can send this to you. You will need to mail the completed form and a money order in US$ funds to the competition organizer. We would suggest a $ money order that can be obtained through Barclays Bank or a check drawn on a US bank. It is important to get your entry in as soon as possible, as otherwise you will not get a place, or you will be charged late entry fees. When you come over, make sure that you bring with you, your home country's water ski federation membership number and card. You can then have a temporary membership of the American Water Ski Association at a cost of $5 - 10.00. If you do not have your card or number with you, you can still compete but would need to join the AWSA as a full member at a cost of $50.00 for the year. Either way, you can obtain a Water Ski Athlete performance card, on which your performance at each competition, can be recorded and signed by the chief judge and chief scorer.
We will gladly help anyone who wishes to enter tournaments in the southern Region. Just call us or e-mail us in plenty of time before your trip. It is a lot of fun and you will get to ski at some fantastic ski sites, with plenty of friendly people.
